This is particularly not true as we have state universities that had proven their worths and can be said to be doing better compared to some Federal universities. 1. LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY (LASU)

Lagos State University is currently ranked as the best state university in Nigeria. This university was established in 1983 by the Lagos State Government. It operates the multi-campus system and as such, has 4 campuses located in Ojo (main campus), Ikeja, Epe and Surulere. It also has about 6 external / affiliated campuses.

Lagos State University has a student population of 61,000.

LASU has 9 faculties which are:

Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences, Business Administration, Law, Sciences, Engineering, School of clinical sciences, School of Basic Medical sciences and Education

2. RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ( RSUST )

River State University of Science and Technology is unarguably one of the best state university in Nigeria. The institution was established in 1980 from the Rivers State College of Science and Technology. This university is the first university in the Niger Delta Region and the first Technological university in Nigeria. This university also is among the only 2 university offering degree programs in Marine Engineering.

It has a student strength of 17,000 and that of staff is put at 3,000.

Rivers State University of Science and Technology has 7 faculties. This includes :

Faculty of Agriculture, Environmental sciences, Management sciences, Law, Technical and Science Education, Engineering, Sciences and Sciences and College of Medicine.

3. AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY (AAU)

Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State was established in 1981 by the then Governor of the Old Bendel state Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli. The University was first named Bendel State University. This name then changed to Edo State University when Edo State was created before it was renamed to the current name as a way of honouring Professor Ambrose.

It has 8 colleges which are:

Arts and social sciences, Natural Sciences, Agriculture and Natural resources, Education, Engineering and Technology, Environmental design, Legal studies and Medical Science.

4. OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY (OOU)

Olabisi Onabanjo University was established in 1982 as Ogun State University (OSU) and renames Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2001 in honour of Chief (Dr.) Olabisi Onabanjo, whose efforts as the then civilian governor of Ogun State gave birth to the university. This university has multiple campus with the Main Campus in Ago Iwoye is popularly referred to as Permanent Site.

The university has:

Faculty Art, Science, Law, Education, Social and Management Science, Obafemi Awolowo College of Medicine, Basic Medical science, and Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences.

5. DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY (DELSU)

The Delta State University, Abraka was established in 1992 by the Delta State Government. This university runs a multi-campus system. It has 3 campuses with 200km apart.

DELSU as it is popularly called has a student strength of 36,000 spread across it 11 faculties

which are:

Faculty of Arts, Science, Education, Law, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Engineering, Environmental studies, Management studies and Basic Medical Science.



6. ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY (AAUA)

This university was established in 1982 by the government of the Old Ondo State, headed by the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin as Obafemi Awolowo University. The name was changed to Ondo State University by the immediate military government of Navy Commodore Michael Bamidele Otiko. Following the creation of a new State out of the Old Ondo State and the relocation of the school to it current location at Akungba Akoko, the name was changed to Adekunle Ajasin University in order to immortalise Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

The school has 6 facilities which are:

Arts, Science, Education, Law, Agriculture, Social and Management Science.

7. EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY (EKSU)

The Ekiti State University was established in 1982. It has a strong connection with the Adekunle Ajasin University as it was part of the university then when Ekiti and Ondo were together as a state. So while checking out the history of this university and the changes of name you would see it just like the same university that separated into 2.

This university has Faculty of :

Agricultural Science, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Education, Engineering, Law, Management Science, Science and Social Sciences.

8. LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (LAUTECH)

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology popularly referred to as LAUTECH is a state owned university of technology in Ogbomosho, Oyo State. Th institution is among the best state university in Nigeria.

It has a student population of 25,000 with at least 3,000 staffs.

The University was established in 1990 as Oyo State University. The University was renamed Ladoke Akintola University when Osun state separated with Oyo State. The ownership of this school is still a major issue today as the 2 state government still claims it.

9. NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY (NDU)

Niger Delta University is located in Wilberforce Island Bayelsa State. This is a Bayelsa state owned university established in 2000 by the former Government of Bayelsa State Chief DSP Alamieseigha. The University is one of the 50 top universities in Nigeria. It currently has 2 campus one in Yenagoa and the other in Amassoma.

Niger Delta University has 9 faculties which are :

Faculty of Agriculture Technology, Art, Engineering, Education, Management Science, Pharmacy, Science, Social Sciences, Law and College of Medical Science.

10. KOGI STATE UNIVERSITY (KSU)

Kogi State University is located in Anyigba, it is the university of Kogi, Nigeria. This University was established in 1999 as Kogi State University by Prince Abubakar Audu, a former governor of the state. It was then renamed Prince Audu Abubakar University (PAAU) in 2002 and later renamed Kogi State University in 2003 (KSU).

Although this University is not very popular, it is one of the best universities in Africa with some of its departments being ranked by Nigerian professional bodies as the best in Nigeria. Sometimes back, the Faculty of law of Kogi State University was ranked as the best in Nigeria. The Geology department also been rated as one of the best in Africa alongside OAU and UI.

The University has a student capacity of 50,000.

11. OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY (OSU)

Osun State University was established in 2006 by the then Governor of Osun State Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. The University is a state owned and state funded university. The University operates the multi-campus system whereby it has one campus in each of the state administrative zone i.e Osogbo, Ikire, Okuku, Ifetedo, Ipetu Ijesha and Ejigbo.

Faculties in this school includes

Social Science and Management, Health Science, Law, Humanities and culture, Agriculture and Education.



12. KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY (KWASU)

Kwara State University was established by the then Governor of Kwara State now Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki in 2009. This university is one of the best state universities in Nigeria. KWASU was registered as the 77th university in the country and became the 95th university to be recognised in Nigeria.

KWASU has 3 campuses which includes the one in Malete (main campus), Ilesha-Baruba and Osi-Opin. Each of these campuses a number of colleges that occupies it.

Generally, KWASU has :

college of Pure and Applied Sciences, Information and Communication Technology, Education, Humanities, Management and Social Sciences, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences.

13. KADUNA STATE UNIVERSITY (KASU)

Kaduna State University is located in Kaduna State. This university was established in 2004 by the state Government. This university currently has 2 campuses. The first and main being the Kaduna campus while the second being the Kafanchan campus which houses the faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

14. ENUGU STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (ESUT)

Enugu State University of Science and Technology was founded in 1980 as Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH) but changed it name to it current name when Enugu State was created. The University has a student carrying capacity of 50,000.

The University has the following faculties:

Faculty of Agricultural and Natural Resources Management, Applied Natural Sciences, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Social Sciences.

15. BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY (BSU)

Benue State University is a state owned university established in 1992 by the Benue State Government in order to have a conventional university so as to augment the specialised Federal University of Agriculture in the State. Since it creation, it had grown to accommodate a large number of students.

The student capacity in 2015 is pegged at 32,000.

Benue State University has the following colleges:

Science, Art, Social Science, Law, Education, Health Science, Environmental Science and Management Science.


16. EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY (EBSU)

Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki is the Ebonyi State University established by the State Government in 1999. This university was part of the former ASUTECH until Enugu State was created in 1991 and as such, Enugu State inherited the ASUTECH campus in Enugu and Ebonyi. Ebonyi State was then created out of Enugu State and it inherited the campus in it territory.

17. NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY

Nasarawa State University is one of the best state university in the north central part of the country. This university is very important especially as it is located in Keffi close to Abuja, The Federal Capital Territory.

18. IMO STATE UNIVERSITY (IMSU)

Imo State University located in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria is a state owned university in Nigeria. This university is one of the best state universities in the country. It was established in in 1981. This university seceded it Uturu Campus when to the Abia State University after Abia State was created in 1991.

19. ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Abia State University started as Imo State University but when Abia State was created, the Imo State University Uturu campus was ceded to Abia State. This is one of the best State Universities especially in the East.

Colleges here includes:

College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Biological and Physical Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Engineering and Environmental Studies, Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Optometry and Postgraduate Studies.

20. ONDO STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (OSUSTECH)

Ondo State University of Science and Technology is located in Okitipupa in Ondo State. This state university was founded in 2010 by the Governor of Ondo State Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

They have only one Faculty. This is the Faculty of Science. The University hope to add to this number.
